John H. Randolph family papers, 1823-1889 (bulk 1834-1889).

The bulk of the collection consists of records concerning the management of Randolph's plantations in Woodville, Mississippi, and Iberville Parish, Louisiana, and the Troy Plantation in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. Plats, survey maps, and deeds document plantations and land held in Texas, Louisiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. Accounts with commission brokers Burbridge and Adams (1850-1854) and Burbridge & Co. (1854-1880) are included. Labor of slaves, freedmen, and hired hands is documented by slave bills of sale, slave insurance contracts with the Southern Mutual Insurance Company, contracts with freedmen, and accounts of wages. Receipts and bills record household expenses for staples, building supplies, and furnishings. Testamentary papers of the estates of John Randolph's brother, Algernon S. Randolph, and his father-in-law, Moses Liddell, document John Randolph's role as executor. Papers related to partnerships with Charles A. Thornton and Franklin Hudson include partnership agreements, account ledgers, records of debts, and receipts. Papers of Emily Jane Randolph (1883-1889) relate to her management and sale of Nottoway Plantation after the death of John Randolph. Some items are related to the White League, a political organization which promoted white racial interests in Louisiana.
